Deborah- What I thought about the class?

I really enjoyed learning the different types of technology. There was some things that I wasn't aware of such as, blogs. I think that for some projects that this could be a great learning tool for student to get involved in. For the hand held technology this would be great for learning things in science and in math. This could help the student to help each other in different methods.

Deborah smart class rooms

I learned that smart class room can be very beneficial to that class room. There are great ideas for the teacher to explore and teach the student with innovation such as this. This gives the student a chance to explore out side the class room. I would love to be able to use this type of technology in the future of my teaching.

For the special needs child I really love the idea that these students have this capability to learn innovations such as jaws and others. With this type of technology this can benefit any kind of child so they don't have to feel that they are left behind.

Deborah Hand held

I think that it is exciting that students can use held hand technology for different subjects in school. The article I read about was for special needs students. They found it to be beneficial for them in writing and agreeing their skills. They found the student had more thought process when they were doing creative writing.

The article that I read was about Charting New Technology. It was about third-graders using handheld palm pilots in the classroom. It was a new way for them to learn any different subject. Being able to use the palms made them feel special because they were the first to use them in their school. They were from a day school for gifted children so most of them knew how to operate them and were not afraid to use them at all. Their teacher was excited to use them with her students because she felt that they were able to go wherever they felt comfortable. They could sit on the floor, walk around outside and them come back to her and share what they had learned.When she would talk to her students about what they had learned, she was able to take notes on each students learning process which was a plus. She liked the idea that each student had access to them rather than only 2-3 students having access to a computer in the classroom at a time.

Horny Toads and handhelds

Students us the handheld to create graphs and interpret data. The horny taoad is a lizard that is also known as the short-horned toad. There is a decline in these types of lizards and scientists are curious why. Students in washington are helping scientists to acquire data.

It was interesting to hear and find out that students are interested in using their handhelds for research. They researched the horny toad, which is declining in numbers. It was interesting to read the article "Lizards and Learning" because my brother and I were always fascinated by the horny toad. My brother would always try and catch them and we would show our parents. Then we would let them go out into the pasture. They sure are fast moving lizards.

According to this article, students are involved in a reclaiming project with a local creek. Once a week, they travel to the creek, handhelds in hand, and do experiments, as well as collect creek data and weather data.

The article points out that this school has a majority of students who are either below poverty line, don't speak English as a main language, or both. The handhelds allow them to work with these students, and allow the students to work with each other, as well as expose the students to new technologies.

The article continues by saying that students share their research work with the community, allowing them to reach beyond the walls of the school, as well as the walls of home.

The students are very involved with the project, and the article indicates they are definitely learning, asking questions, and going beyond normal classroom activities. In this instance, collecting data from the creek might not be possible without the handhelds. So this article does show one instance where handhelds are certainly making a difference.

I picked this article, because it was one of the ones which came up when I searched for 3-4 grade articles dealing with handheld devices, and also because I thought the title, "Reclaiming a creek offers students hands-on lessons" was very interesting.

The article I read was about 4th grade students with special needs learning about the world's rainforests. The teachers use a variety of technologies, i.e., internet, handhelds, traditional textbooks, etc. The purpose of the handhelds are to enable the students to take notes immediately on what they have read or what they have learned. They are then synced onto a PC where they are turned into electronic presentations. A picture of the student working is included with his/her presentation. In June, the students share their reports with the entire school.

The teachers like this unit because it helps to mainstream their students, as well as showing them that everyone is important and smart. The students started to recycle paper so they could save the trees.

I picked this article because in our reading series we have a story entitled, "The Great Kapok Tree." The story is about a man who is going to chop down a tree and falls asleep. While he is asleep all of the animals of the rainforest tell him why he should not cut the tree. My third grade students become obsessed with finding as much information as possible on the rainforest. Using the handhelds and various other technologies the students would write a research paper for a science grade without even realizing it.

Blogs

In the articles we read we observed that schools are using blogs in a variety of ways. Two of the articles cited the way in which two seperate schools in different regions of the country used blogs as a means for the students in the high school to serve as mentors to the kids in the elementary school. These blogs not only built confidence in the elementary school children it also built parent involvement by allowing parents to access their childs work on the net.

In the article of diffrent points of view these children were able to get feed back from parents or anyone who read their articals on the web. It helped them to get better undestanding in what they were researching on. Also, people would respond on other points of view for these students. There were many students who did'nt speak the same lanugage which helped them with thier writing skills. This helped the student to have motivation on their subject.

In the article Weblogging to success, It discussed using weblogs as research tools. The research tools use is cost effective, it improves writing skills, individualizes instruction, and it helps to revise assignments.

On the subject of Blogs, we three have the following to say...

Networking is the top of the list. Networking allows for a range of communication, like parents, students, online communities, faculty and staff. Inside the Classroom, the teacher can have the kids do class projects in a blog, daily writing journals, science experiments (with results), book reviews, suggested reading lists, and even an author's corner. Inside the school, a blog allows for school calendars, and monthly newsletters (with feedback), and even school upcoming events, like family nights, talent shows, etc. Outside of the school, a Blog allows for parents to communicate with teachers and students, students can communicate with other schools, and even kids from other countries. Grandparents and family members who live far away can connect to the student's work online.

Reading is another area where Blogs can help. Teachers can connect to students, with instant feedback, can track student strengths and weaknesses, and can share lesson plans (either with other teachers, or with students who missed because they were sick). Student audio blogs allow a student to hear their work, allows students to catch their own mistakes, and redo the work correctly, without the teacher "harping" on them.

There are even some creative aspects to Blogging. Digital photos can create a polished look for projects, class or school newsletters, and even an online yearbook. With a Blog, the projects can be on going, allowing for easy updates and revisions.


On the Subject of "Emily's Newsletter" we were impressed that this was the work of a 5th grader, who had been Blogging for two years now. Melissa liked how she had links to the blogs of classmates. We are curious if Emily is really the one typing her blog though, as it appears error free. However, based on the articles we read, Emily probably had to have all the text worked out before she typed it. The added pictures were a nice feature, allowing others to see the artwork that students have done. Student's humor can come out in the artwork, such as the "Pull Yourself Together" picture, which we all got a laugh out of.
